The Breath of God

I’m waiting…waiting for inspiration to strike. Quite honestly, I feel I should make a pilgrimage to County Cork, Ireland, to kiss the stone at Blarney castle. Legend has it that kissing the Blarney Stone bestows you with the gift of eloquence. I remember visiting the castle with my husband and in-laws, watching as they wiggled underneath where the stone was mounted and planted their lips on the stone in the hope of gaining the “gift of gab”. As I was looking through the preschool book stacks recently for a monthly blessing to put on my bulletin board, I came across a book that I’ve read before but it always still pulls at my heart. Even though it is a children’s book it is appropriate for all ages and I would love to share parts of this book with you. The Starfish

Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a person going back and forth between the surf’s edge and the beach. Back and forth this person went. As the man approached, he could see that there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand as the result of the natural action of the tide.

The man was struck by the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish. Many of them were sure to perish. As he approached, the person continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing them into the surf. Continue reading
